Winter Blossom QAL - Week 2

Winter Blossom QAL - Week 2

Square Units

Hello and welcome back!

It’s Week 2 of the Winter Blossom Quilt Along, and things are starting to get exciting! By now, you should have all your fabrics cut and ready to go. That means it’s time for the fun part—sewing!

Before we dive in, here are a few helpful links you might want to bookmark:

Week 2

This week, we’re diving into all the sewing fun! We’ll be working on our square units. They come together quickly and are super easy to stitch up. So set your favorite TV show, Podcast or Audiobook and get sewing!

What are you watching or listening to during the QAL? I would love some new recommendations.

Tips for Week 2:

  • Test your seam allowance before you start:
A seam allowance that’s too wide or too narrow can throw off the size of your blocks. Even small inconsistencies can add up, making it harder to align your pieces or keep your quilt top flat.

  • Keep your seam allowance consistent:
Precision is key—especially for blocks where matching points and seams really matters. A consistent seam allowance helps everything line up beautifully and keeps those crisp points from getting chopped off or misaligned.

  • Follow the pressing instructions:
Pressing your seams as directed will help them nest nicely and lay flat, making assembly smoother and more accurate.

  • Square up if needed:
If you notice any fabric overhang, go ahead and square it up for clean, even edges.

A few of my favorite sewing helpers:

These are products I use and love—they make the sewing process so much easier and more enjoyable!

  • Mary Ellen's Best Press- helps seams become super flat; making assembly easier and your quilt top smoother overall.
  • Tailors Clapper - helps retain heat when pressing & encourages seams to lie flat.
  • Wool Mat - Wool retains heat really well, so when you press a seam on the mat, it reflects the heat back up into the fabric. It’s like pressing from the top and bottom at the same time
  • Oliso Mini Iron: Don’t let the “mini” fool you—this little iron gets hot quickly and delivers consistent heat, making it super effective for pressing quilt blocks flat. I use mine without steam and love it.
